.env.laravel Work

This design allows developers to write environment-agnostic configuration files.

file is a critical configuration file used to manage application settings and sensitive data across different environments (local, staging, production). It allows you to store credentials like database passwords and API keys without hardcoding them into your source code. For security and performance (especially when using php artisan config:cache ), you should call env() directly in your application code. Instead, map the .env value to a configuration file (e.g., config/features.php ). or PHP-FPM env ).

Instead of a physical .env file on production, you can set real environment variables in your web server (Apache SetEnv , Nginx env , or PHP-FPM env ). Laravel’s env() helper checks system variables before falling back to the .env file. .env.laravel

Always provide a second argument to the env() function in your config files to act as a fallback if the key is missing.
