Shantanu, aged by longing, wandered the palace gardens where one day his gaze fell upon a young, luminous man—Devavrata, son of his late consort Satyavati's union from before. Devavrata’s eyes were steady with duty and a quiet fire. The king, sensing in him the anchor his house needed, named him heir and asked him to take a vow to protect the throne.
