By 1569, in exile in Basel, Switzerland, he published the first complete Spanish Bible translated from the original Hebrew and Greek—not from the Latin Vulgate. It was called the Biblia del Oso (Bear Bible), named for the bear on its title page. For Spanish-speaking Protestants, it was a forbidden treasure.
