At the center of the film is the relationship between Jaime and his son. Jaime is a tragic figure. A Ukrainian immigrant who adored Stalin, he runs a tiny haberdashery but dreams of being a revolutionary hero. He is abusive, narcissistic, and deeply insecure. In one of the film's most stunning sequences, Jaime attempts to kill the young Alejandro by forcing a stick of dynamite into his mouth, believing the boy to be "too sensitive" to survive the real world.
