The film takes place in 1915 in New Orleans' French Quarter. The story revolves around Al Pereira (Keith Carradine), a photographer who runs a brothel. One of the girls working for Al is Violet (Brooke Shields), a 12-year-old girl who was abandoned by her mother and has been living on the streets. Al takes Violet under his wing, and she becomes a sort of mascot for the brothel.
