Gangubai Kathiawadi follows a young girl named Ganga (Alia Bhatt), who dreams of becoming a Bollywood actress. Deceived by her lover, she is sold to a brothel in Kamathipura. Refusing to be a victim, she transforms into – a fearless leader who runs the neighborhood with an iron fist. She adopts a son, fights against human trafficking, and eventually gains the respect of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
The story begins with Ganga, a young girl from an affluent family in Gujarat who dreams of becoming a film actress. She is lured to Mumbai by her boyfriend, Ramnik, under the false promise of a movie career, only to be sold into a brothel in Kamathipura. This betrayal serves as the catalyst for her evolution. Instead of succumbing to despair, she adopts the name Gangubai and eventually rises to become an influential madam and a "mafia queen".
