Unlike the geisha (artists of song and dance), the oiran were high-ranking courtesans of the Edo period. They were the supermodels of their day—walking in towering geta (wooden clogs) and wearing extravagant, layered silks. The oiran aesthetic is loud, proud, and unapologetically maximalist.

Kumashiro, however, refused to simply churn out exploitation product. Oiran was a prestige production. It benefited from a higher budget than typical "pink films" of the time, allowing for elaborate costume design and set decoration that authentically recreated the Meiji/Taisho era atmosphere.
